Naming a Brand

Here is some info I shared back last fall when we were designing your food truck brands that I felt might help.

There are 7 types of brand names:

FOUNDER: Using the names of real people, (especially a founder's name), such as Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Disney

DESCRIPTIVE :  Names that describe a product benefit or function, such as Whole Foods, Airbus or Toys R' Us

FABRICATED: Completely made-up words, such as Wii or Kodak, Xerox

METAPHOR: Things, place, people, animals, mythological names or foreign words are used in this tie of name to allude to quality of the company. Names like Nike and Patagonia tell a metaphoric story.

ACRONYM: A pronounceable word formed from the initial letters of a name. Once an acronym becomes embedded in the language, most people forget the origin. Examples are NABISCO, MADD and GEICO.

MAGIC SPELL :  These names alter a words spelling in order to create a distinctive, protectable name. Examples are Cingular and Netflix.

COMBINATION: A simple solution. Any combination of existing words that are put together to create your own new word and brand name.
